1. What information we collect

When you donate or contact the Fund, we collect the information needed to process your gift and steward the relationship: your name and contact details, gift amount and date, payment information (processed securely and not stored by the Fund beyond what the law requires), correspondence, and — where you provide it — the purpose or designation of your gift. The website may also collect standard analytics data (pages visited, device type) under the site’s cookie notice.

2. How we use it

We use donor information to process gifts, send receipts and acknowledgments, meet legal and tax obligations (including IRS substantiation and reporting), communicate about the Fund’s work, and produce aggregate, anonymized reporting. We do not use donor information for purposes incompatible with these without your consent.

Online gifts are processed by Stripe. Stripe receives the payment information needed to complete your transaction; Balance Fund never receives or stores your card details.

3. What we never do

We do not sell, rent, trade, or exchange our donor lists or donor information with any other organization or individual. Donor information is shared externally only as required by law (for example, tax filings) or with service providers who process gifts on our behalf under confidentiality obligations.

4. Your opt-out rights

You may at any time:

  • ask that your name and address not be shared outside the organization;
  • ask to be removed from any mailing or contact list;
  • ask what information we hold about you and request corrections.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us through our contact page at https://www.balancefund.org/contact. We honor opt-out requests within 30 days and confirm when done.

5. Anonymous gifts

You may give anonymously. Anonymous gifts are recorded without donor-identifying information beyond what payment processing and the law require, and anonymous donors are never identified in public materials.

6. Data security

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to protect donor information, including limiting access to those who need it for the purposes in Section 2. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach affecting donor data, we notify affected donors as the law requires.

7. Children’s information

We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we learn we have done so, we delete it.

8. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we post the updated version on our website with its effective date and note material changes. The version in effect at the time of your gift governs that gift’s information.

Appendix: The Donor Bill of Rights

The Fund endorses the Donor Bill of Rights, developed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Giving Institute (adopted November 1993). Every donor has the right to:

  1. Be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  2. Be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  3. Have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  4. Be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  5. Receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  6. Be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  7. Expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  8. Be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization, or hired solicitors.
  9. Have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  10. Feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful, and forthright answers.
